Chop It Like It’s Hot! is the Virginia Highlands Festival’s youth culinary initiative designed to introduce kids and teens to the excitement of cooking through hands-on classes, chef-led experiences, and interactive competitions throughout the year.

Master Class Series

Hands-On Culinary Experiences for Young Chefs

The Chop It Like It’s Hot Master Class Series gives aspiring young cooks the opportunity to learn directly from talented regional chefs and culinary professionals. Each class introduces new techniques, ingredients, and creative skills in a fun, supportive environment designed specifically for young participants.

From baking and pastry basics to flavor exploration and presentation techniques, students gain practical hands-on experience while building confidence in the kitchen.

Featured Master Class

Baking with Chef Bianca Pickle

Join Chef Bianca Pickle, pastry chef and founder of Salt & Honey Bakery in Abingdon, Virginia, for a special baking-focused master class as part of the Chop It Like It’s Hot series.

Participants will learn foundational baking techniques, decorating skills, flavor combinations, and pastry preparation in a collaborative, hands-on environment. This class is designed for teens and pre-teens interested in baking, creativity, and culinary exploration.

Youth Cooking Competition

The Competition Experience

Building on the momentum of the Master Class Series, Chop It Like It’s Hot also features a live youth cooking competition where participants can put their creativity and culinary skills to the test in a high-energy, team-focused environment.

Young chefs work through themed culinary challenges while learning teamwork, time management, presentation skills, and problem-solving from professional chefs and mentors.

The competition is designed to celebrate growth, creativity, and confidence while encouraging students to experiment, collaborate, and have fun.

More Than Cooking

Chop It Like It’s Hot is about more than recipes. The program helps young people develop confidence, creativity, communication, leadership, and collaboration through culinary arts and community experiences.

By connecting students with local chefs, restaurants, farms, and mentors, the Virginia Highlands Festival hopes to inspire the next generation of creators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders while celebrating the region’s food culture and hospitality traditions.
