Description: During the Civil War, Abingdon provided many soldiers and materiel in support of the Confederate war effort. Saved from the horrors of the conflict for the first part of the war, everything changed when Major General George Stoneman targeted the area’s rich resources in December 1864. Historian Michael Shaffer, author of “Washington County Virginia in the Civil War,” will share insights on the military action in the area during this last year of the war.
