The long rifle was a surprise factor in winning American independence. It used less powder and was four times more accurate than a smooth bore gun, making it ideal for hunting deer for the deerskin trade and was an effective combat weapon during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Wallace Gusler, the retired master gunsmith at Colonial Williamsburg, will discuss the evolution of the iconic American long rifle.
He is guest curator of “The Long Rifle in Virginia” exhibit at the William King Museum of Art which runs through October 31.
