The Creeper Trail Ride gives bikers a chance to experience the beauty of the Virginia Creeper Trail.  Lawrence Dye, an 87-year-old Trail Ambassador, has logged more than 192,000 miles of biking on the region’s finest rails-to-trails landmark. Lawrence the Legend often rode daily to Whitetop Station and back to Abingdon.

Naturalist-led Hike to Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve

Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve in Russell County has waterfalls, limestone cliffs and an abundance of wildflowers, including several state and globally-rare species. It is owned and managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Claiborne Woodall, with DCR’s Natural Heritage Program, will lead a 6-mile roundtrip hike to Big Falls, Grapevine Hill, and the Clinch River.  Some portions of the hike are very strenuous. Participants must bring lunch, drinking water, and sturdy hiking boots. Also perhaps bring a camera, field guides, rain gear, and binoculars. Meet at Food Country at 15811 Porterfield Highway at 8 am to carpool.

Immerse yourself in the 1860s. Civil War reenactors will give visitors a look and feel for the Civil War including camp life, military drill, and the excitement of a battle between the Blues and the Grays. Feel the rumble of the cannon, smell the musket fire, and experience history come to life. Throughout the day meet reenactors, chat with historians, and shop with sutlers (period merchants). Bring the whole family!

Both Union and Confederate troops used the Abingdon Muster Grounds during the Civil War. Walk the property where Lieutenant Samuel Vance Fulkerson mustered some of the 37th Virginia Infantry. See the 1813 historic house “Retirement” which was occupied by invading Union troops in 1864.

The Fine Arts Committee of the 71st Annual Virginia Highlands Festival is excited to announce the 2019 Juried Fine Arts Exhibit at the Abingdon Arts Depot beginning July 26th through Sunday August 4th. Entries will be accepted at the Arts Depot in Abingdon on Saturday July 20th and Sunday July 21st from 2-5pm. $3000 in cash prizes will be awarded for work selected by our juror, including one People’s Choice prize that will be voted on by the public. Following our annual tradition, this year’s juror, Suzie Dittenber of UNC Asheville, present awards on Thursday evening July 25th. Much of the art on display at the Festival Gallery will be for sale, making this a great opportunity for art enthusiast to add to their collection! Don’t miss this year’s Juried Fine Art Exhibit! Come witness the talent of your local artists and vote to select this year’s People’s Choice award winner!

Cell phone photography doesn’t have to mean blurry action shots and duck-faced selfies.
