Living History Tour of the Sinking Spring Cemetery
Saturday, July 27 @ 5:00 pm - 7:15 pm| $5
On Saturday, July 27 the Historical Society of Washington County, VA will host a Living History tour of Sinking Spring Cemetery, featuring interpreters in period costumes telling brief stories of some of the Spirits resting there. The cemetery was the primary burying ground for the area from 1773 throughout much of the 19th century. Now six acres in size, it contains approximately 2000 marked and 500 unmarked graves.
The first small group tour begins at 5:00pm and the last starts at 7:15pm. Each tour lasts about an hour. Admission is $5/person. All proceeds benefit the Historical Society’s building fund.
There will be five Spirits in all and guides will point out other graves of local interest as the small groups are led through the grounds. You may even find out who is actually in the “Mound”, which is usually the first question asked of the guides.
The tour is appropriate for families; however very small children may become tired or bored. There is nothing scary about the presentations or the location. The ground is uneven, so we recommend comfortable shoes.
There is free parking in the Society’s parking lot at 341 W. Main (corner of Russell Road).
